Gridlock Along Kubwa Expressway in Abuja

Gridlock Along Kubwa Expressway as Fallen Trailer Causes Major Traffic Disruption in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria — September 8, 2025

Commuters in Nigeria’s capital city faced severe delays on Monday morning after a trailer fell across the Kubwa Expressway, one of Abuja’s busiest transit corridors. The incident, which occurred in the early hours, brought traffic to a near standstill, affecting thousands of motorists during peak travel hours.

Eyewitnesses say the trailer — reportedly laden with construction materials — overturned near the Gwarimpa Bridge section of the expressway around 5:30am local time. The cause of the crash remains unclear, though preliminary reports suggest the driver may have lost control due to brake failure.

Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), police, and civil defence, were quickly dispatched to the scene. However, efforts to clear the massive vehicle and its scattered cargo have proven difficult, with officials saying recovery operations could extend well into the afternoon.

Speaking to reporters, FRSC spokesperson Bisi Kazeem urged motorists to seek alternative routes. “We are working to restore normal traffic flow as quickly and safely as possible,” he said. “We understand the inconvenience this has caused and appreciate the public’s patience.”

The Kubwa Expressway connects central Abuja with the satellite towns of Kubwa, Dutse, and Bwari, and is a vital artery for daily commuters. Monday’s disruption rippled across adjacent routes, including the Murtala Mohammed Expressway and the Outer Northern Expressway, leading to widespread congestion.

Videos shared on social media show long queues of stranded vehicles, with some drivers reportedly stuck for over three hours. Passengers were seen abandoning vehicles to trek considerable distances, particularly those attempting to reach workplaces or school drop-offs.

Calls have intensified for stricter enforcement of safety regulations for heavy-duty vehicles, which are frequently involved in road accidents across the country. Road safety advocates are also pressing for improved infrastructure and better traffic management systems in the FCT.

As of press time, no fatalities have been reported, but authorities are advising the public to monitor official traffic updates and avoid the area if possible.
