IGP Disu Disburses N2.43bn to Families of Fallen Police Officers Nationwide

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Wednesday presented cheques totaling over N2.43 billion to the families and next of kin of 1,075 police officers who died in active service across Nigeria.

The disbursement, carried out under the welfare and insurance scheme of the Nigeria Police Force, is part of ongoing efforts to provide financial support to families of personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Support for Fallen Heroes’ Families

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, the police chief described the initiative as a demonstration of the Force’s commitment to the welfare of its officers and their families, particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

Disu noted that the payment covers life insurance benefits and other entitlements due to the deceased officers, adding that the gesture is aimed at easing the financial burden on their dependents.

He emphasized that the sacrifices of the fallen officers would not be forgotten, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to improving the welfare, morale, and working conditions of its personnel.

Strengthening Welfare and Morale

The Inspector-General reiterated that welfare remains a top priority under his leadership, noting that prompt settlement of benefits is critical to maintaining morale within the Force.

According to him, ensuring that families of deceased officers receive their entitlements without undue delay sends a strong message to serving personnel that their well-being—and that of their loved ones—will be protected.

The initiative, he added, aligns with broader reforms aimed at repositioning the police institution and enhancing its effectiveness in tackling security challenges across the country.

Nationwide Coverage

Beneficiaries of the N2.43 billion payout were drawn from across various commands and formations nationwide, reflecting the widespread impact of security operations and the risks faced by officers in different parts of the country.

Police authorities disclosed that the exercise is part of a continuous process, with efforts ongoing to settle outstanding claims and ensure that all eligible families are captured under the scheme.

Calls for Sustained Support

Security experts and stakeholders have long advocated improved welfare packages for law enforcement personnel, arguing that adequate compensation and support systems are essential for boosting operational efficiency and public trust.

The latest disbursement has been welcomed as a step in the right direction, though analysts note that sustained commitment will be required to address longstanding welfare concerns within the Force.

Commitment to Reform

Under Disu’s leadership, the Nigeria Police Force has pledged to prioritize reforms that enhance professionalism, accountability, and service delivery. Welfare initiatives, including insurance payouts and improved working conditions, form a key pillar of this agenda.

The IGP reaffirmed that the Force would continue to explore additional measures to support officers and their families, including partnerships with relevant stakeholders and institutions.

Conclusion

The presentation of over N2.43 billion to families of fallen officers underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s recognition of the sacrifices made by its personnel. As the country continues to grapple with complex security challenges, such initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening morale and reinforcing the commitment of officers to their duties.

For the families of the deceased, the financial support offers some relief, even as the nation remembers the service and dedication of those who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
