Nigeria Set for Spectacular Lunar Eclipse This Evening

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigerians will have the rare opportunity to witness a lunar eclipse today, September 7, according to astronomical forecasts.

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) confirmed that the phenomenon will be visible in several parts of the country, weather permitting. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow that darkens the Moon’s surface.

Experts say the eclipse will be a partial lunar eclipse, meaning only a portion of the Moon will be covered by the Earth’s shadow. The event is expected to begin in the evening and last for several hours.

NASRDA advised members of the public to take advantage of the rare event, noting that it can be safely observed with the naked eye.

“Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch without special equipment. Nigerians are encouraged to look up and enjoy the spectacle,” a NASRDA spokesperson said.

The agency also encouraged astronomy enthusiasts, schools, and science groups to use the event as an opportunity to promote interest in space science among young people.

This will be the second lunar eclipse visible in Nigeria in 2025, with another one expected later in the year.
