Lagos, Nigeria – A massive fire has broken out in a high-rise building in Lagos, leaving several occupants reportedly trapped as emergency services race against time to contain the blaze.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday in the central business district of Lagos Island, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and sparking panic among residents and nearby businesses. Eyewitnesses say the fire started from the upper floors of the building, quickly spreading through multiple levels.
Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service are currently on the scene, working alongside the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other first responders to evacuate residents and battle the inferno.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure that everyone is safely rescued,” said a spokesperson for the Fire Service. “Our teams are using ladders and high-rise rescue equipment to reach those trapped.”
The exact number of people inside the building at the time of the incident remains unclear, and authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the fire or any casualties.
Videos circulating on social media show distressed occupants waving from windows, with some attempting to signal for help from upper floors. Bystanders and volunteers have gathered at the scene, urging authorities to expedite rescue operations.
Traffic in surrounding areas has been diverted as a safety measure, with officials urging Lagosians to avoid the vicinity to allow emergency teams unhindered access.
This incident adds to growing concerns over fire safety and emergency preparedness in high-density urban areas of Lagos. The government is expected to launch a full investigation once the fire is fully contained.
