JUST IN: Nigerian Army Confirms Arrest of IPOB/ESN Commander ‘Gentle De Yahoo’
Abuja, Nigeria – September 17, 2025 – The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a high-profile commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), known by the alias Gentle De Yahoo.
In an official statement released today, military authorities revealed that the arrest was made during a coordinated intelligence-led operation in the South-East region, aimed at dismantling separatist networks and restoring peace in communities affected by violent activities.
According to the Army, Gentle De Yahoo has been on the most-wanted list for his alleged involvement in a series of violent attacks on security personnel, public infrastructure, and local residents in Imo and Anambra States.
“This arrest marks a significant breakthrough in our ongoing counter-insurgency operations against criminal elements masquerading as freedom fighters,” the statement read. “The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation, and he is expected to face prosecution for numerous crimes linked to terrorism and armed insurgency.”
The Army commended the cooperation of local residents and community leaders who provided actionable intelligence that led to the operation’s success. Troops reportedly recovered weapons, ammunition, and communication gadgets from the suspect at the time of his arrest.
Military sources added that operations in the region will continue until all threats to national security are neutralized. The Nigerian Army also reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the South-East, urging residents to remain vigilant and law-abiding.
The arrest of Gentle De Yahoo is seen as a major blow to IPOB/ESN’s operational command, with security analysts saying it could disrupt planned attacks and weaken the group’s leadership structure.
This development comes amid intensified efforts by the Federal Government to combat rising insecurity and separatist activities, while also promoting dialogue and reconciliation in the region.
Authorities have assured the public that due process will be followed as investigations continue, and they reaffirmed their resolve to protect citizens and uphold the rule of law.
