JUST IN: Federal Government Reintroduces Nigerian History as Compulsory Subject in Basic Education Curriculum

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially reintroduced Nigerian History as a compulsory subject in the national basic education curriculum, a move aimed at strengthening national identity and fostering a deeper sense of unity and patriotism among young Nigerians.

Announcing the development, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated that the decision is part of a broader effort to promote responsible citizenship, cultural awareness, and a greater understanding of Nigeria’s rich and diverse heritage.

“Reintroducing History in our schools is crucial for building a generation of informed, patriotic, and responsible citizens. Our young people must understand where we are coming from as a nation to shape where we are going,” Dr. Alausa said.

The subject will now be taught from primary through junior secondary school levels, with the updated curriculum designed to highlight key historical events, heroes, pre-colonial civilizations, and the struggles that led to Nigeria’s independence and democratic development.

Education stakeholders and cultural advocates have welcomed the move, describing it as a long-overdue step toward correcting historical gaps in the education system and nurturing a more united national consciousness among students.

This reintroduction is seen as a strategic component of Nigeria’s education reform agenda, aimed at equipping future generations with the knowledge and values needed to build a stronger and more cohesive nation.
