The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested 47-year-old Ajibola Oduntan, a UK-based Nigerian who also holds an Irish passport, for allegedly running a ticket scam that defrauded Kentucky Performing Arts (KPA) of more than $100,000 during a Broadway musical weekend in late 2023.
According to investigators, Oduntan used fraudulent means to purchase large volumes of tickets, reselling them at inflated prices and leaving KPA with significant financial losses. The scam was uncovered after irregularities in ticketing records were detected, prompting an internal review and eventual federal investigation.
How the Ticket Scam Worked
Law enforcement officials revealed that Oduntan allegedly exploited the online ticketing system during a Broadway musical series in Kentucky, using stolen or compromised payment details. By the time the fraudulent transactions were flagged, most of the tickets had already been sold to unsuspecting theatergoers.
This left the venue dealing with chargebacks and financial shortfalls totaling over $100,000. Authorities say the scam not only defrauded Kentucky Performing Arts but also disrupted operations and cast a shadow over what was supposed to be a major cultural event.
International Investigation and Arrest
Given Oduntan’s ties to the UK and Ireland, the investigation quickly took on an international dimension. The FBI worked closely with global law enforcement partners to track his activities across multiple jurisdictions.
He was eventually arrested and is now facing federal charges in the United States. If convicted, Oduntan could face significant prison time and restitution payments.
Broader Concerns About Ticket Fraud
The case has raised fresh concerns about the rise of online ticketing scams targeting major events, concerts, and theatrical performances. Fraud experts warn that cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting digital platforms, using sophisticated methods to trick venues and customers.
Officials at Kentucky Performing Arts emphasized that new security measures have since been implemented to prevent a repeat of the incident. They also urged the public to always purchase tickets through verified platforms to avoid falling victim to similar schemes.
A Wake-Up Call for the Entertainment Industry
The arrest of Ajibola Oduntan underscores the importance of stronger safeguards in the global ticketing industry. With entertainment venues worldwide relying heavily on digital sales, experts say collaboration between event organizers, payment processors, and law enforcement will be critical in stopping such scams.
For now, the FBI continues to investigate whether Oduntan acted alone or was part of a larger network specializing in ticket fraud across multiple countries.
