Enugu Governor Peter Mbah Unveils Plan to Generate 1,000MW Power from Coal

The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has announced a bold plan to harness the state’s abundant coal deposits to generate 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity. This initiative is expected to significantly boost energy supply, drive industrial growth, and position Enugu as a leading energy hub in Nigeria.

Speaking during a state briefing, Governor Mbah emphasized that the coal-to-power project is part of his administration’s strategy to tackle energy shortages, attract investment, and accelerate economic transformation in Enugu and the wider South-East region.

Coal as a Driver of Energy Security

Enugu, historically known as the “Coal City,” sits on vast coal reserves that remain largely untapped. Governor Mbah highlighted that the state’s natural resources provide a unique opportunity to develop a 1,000MW power project capable of supplying electricity to industries, households, and commercial hubs.

He stressed that energy availability is the backbone of economic progress, noting that stable power supply would create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, reduce reliance on costly generators, and support the government’s vision of sustainable development.

Boosting Investment and Industrialization

The coal-powered electricity project is expected to attract both local and foreign investors eager to participate in Enugu’s industrial expansion. By leveraging its energy resources, the state aims to establish industrial clusters, promote small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and create thousands of jobs across different sectors.

Governor Mbah noted that energy infrastructure will also enhance Enugu’s competitiveness, enabling it to serve as a gateway for regional commerce and innovation.

Balancing Coal with Clean Energy Transition

While coal remains central to the plan, the governor assured residents that the project will incorporate modern, clean coal technologies to minimize environmental impact. He emphasized that his administration is committed to balancing industrialization with sustainability, ensuring that the energy mix includes renewable alternatives such as solar and hydropower in the long term.

Enugu’s Path to Energy Independence

By tapping into its coal reserves, Enugu State seeks to achieve energy independence, reduce reliance on the national grid, and provide uninterrupted power to its citizens. Analysts say that if successfully implemented, the 1,000MW coal-to-power project could transform Enugu into a powerhouse for electricity generation, benefiting not only the state but also neighboring regions.

Looking Ahead

Governor Peter Mbah’s declaration signals a new era for Enugu’s energy and economic future. With implementation strategies already underway, the project is expected to become a cornerstone of the state’s industrial revolution, creating opportunities for growth, innovation, and prosperity.
