The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kano State Command, has arrested six suspected vandals for the illegal removal and theft of railway sleepers in Kiru Local Government Area.
The suspects were apprehended following an intelligence-led operation by NSCDC operatives, who had been monitoring activities around critical railway infrastructure in the area. Authorities said the individuals were caught in the act of dismantling and removing components of the railway line, a practice that poses serious risks to public safety and national assets.
Crackdown on Infrastructure Vandalism
Officials of the corps described the arrests as part of a broader effort to combat the growing menace of infrastructure vandalism across Kano State and other parts of the country. Railway sleepers, which serve as essential support structures for train tracks, are often targeted by vandals for resale or reuse, leading to costly damage and potential disruptions to rail transport.
The NSCDC emphasized that such acts not only undermine government investments in infrastructure but also endanger lives by weakening the integrity of railway systems.
Ongoing Investigation
According to the command, preliminary investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the suspects’ activities and whether they are part of a larger network involved in the theft and sale of railway materials.
Authorities also disclosed that efforts are being intensified to track down other accomplices who may have fled the scene, as well as buyers who facilitate the illegal trade in stolen infrastructure components.
Warning to Vandals
The NSCDC issued a stern warning to individuals and groups engaged in vandalism, stating that the corps will not relent in its mandate to protect critical national infrastructure.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around public facilities, including railway lines, pipelines, and power installations.
Commitment to Public Safety
The command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, noting that protecting infrastructure is essential to national development and economic stability.
The six suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, in line with relevant laws governing vandalism and theft of public assets.
