BREAKING: Police Arrest Officer Who Threatened to Kill Anyone Filming Him on Duty

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a police officer captured in a viral video threatening to kill anyone who attempted to film him while on duty.

The officer, whose identity was not immediately disclosed by authorities, sparked outrage on social media after a video surfaced showing him issuing violent threats to members of the public during an encounter believed to have occurred at a roadside checkpoint.

In the now widely circulated clip, the officer allegedly warned that he would shoot or kill anyone seen recording him with a mobile phone while carrying out his duties. The incident triggered widespread condemnation from Nigerians, civil society groups and human rights advocates who described the remarks as unprofessional and intimidating.

Reacting to the development, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the officer had been taken into custody and is currently undergoing disciplinary procedures.

Police authorities said the conduct displayed in the video does not reflect the values and operational standards of the Force, stressing that officers are expected to uphold professionalism, accountability and respect for citizens’ rights at all times.

The Force also reassured the public that appropriate sanctions would be applied following investigations into the incident.

The arrest comes amid increasing public scrutiny of police conduct in Nigeria, particularly regarding the treatment of civilians at checkpoints and during stop-and-search operations.

Over the years, cases involving harassment, intimidation and abuse by some security operatives have continued to generate public concern, especially after the 2020 nationwide End SARS protests against police brutality.

Legal experts have repeatedly stated that citizens have the constitutional right to record public officials, including police officers, while they are performing official duties in public spaces, provided such actions do not obstruct security operations or investigations.

Human rights advocates say video recordings by citizens have increasingly become important tools for accountability and transparency in law enforcement.

The latest incident has once again sparked debates online over police reforms, officer training and the need for stronger enforcement of disciplinary measures within the security sector.

Many Nigerians on social media commended the swift response by police authorities, while others called for a transparent investigation and public disclosure of the disciplinary outcome.

Security analysts say decisive action against misconduct by officers is necessary to rebuild public confidence in law enforcement institutions and strengthen police-community relations across the country.

The Nigeria Police Force has urged members of the public to remain law-abiding while also encouraging citizens to report cases of misconduct, abuse or unprofessional behaviour by officers through official complaint channels.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
