BREAKING: Tinubu Pays Super Falcons ₦140m Each as Players Receive $100,000 WAFCON Reward

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fulfilled his financial reward promise to Nigeria’s Super Falcons, with each player receiving the naira equivalent of $100,000 following the team’s historic victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced that the players have received their cash rewards, while members of the team’s technical crew, coaches and officials received the naira equivalent of $50,000 each.

The development completes the cash component of the presidential reward package announced after Nigeria defeated hosts Morocco to win a record-extending 10th continental title.

The announcement was made by the National Sports Commission on Monday, November 2, 2026, and reported widely by Nigerian media on Tuesday.

According to reports, each player received approximately ₦140 million, representing the naira equivalent of the $100,000 promised by President Tinubu.

The payment brings an end to the wait for the financial component of the reward package, which the President announced during a reception organised for the victorious team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on July 28, 2025.

The NSC said the Federal Government had fulfilled its commitment to the players and officials, describing the payment as recognition of the team’s outstanding contribution to Nigerian sports.

Tinubu Fulfils $100,000 Promise to Each Super Falcons Player

President Tinubu announced the financial rewards shortly after the Super Falcons secured their 10th WAFCON championship in Morocco.

Under the arrangement, each member of the playing squad was promised the naira equivalent of $100,000, while members of the technical crew were promised $50,000 each.

The President also promised the players and technical officials three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours.

With the latest payment, the Federal Government has completed the cash component of the reward package.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, commended Tinubu for ensuring that the financial commitments were honoured.

Dikko said the Super Falcons had made Nigeria proud and deserved recognition for their achievement.

He explained that the fulfilment of the promise demonstrated the administration’s commitment to rewarding sporting excellence and ensuring that athletes received the benefits promised to them.

The NSC chairman also expressed appreciation to the government officials and ministries involved in facilitating the payments.

Super Falcons Already Received Houses and National Honours

The cash payment follows the earlier fulfilment of other components of the presidential reward package.

Members of the Super Falcons had previously received title documents for three-bedroom apartments allocated to them under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme in Abuja.

The players and members of the technical team were also conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

The awards were announced by Tinubu during the presidential reception held on July 28, 2025.

The housing allocation and national honours were intended to recognise the players’ contribution to Nigeria’s sporting history and encourage further achievements in women’s football.

The latest financial payment therefore completes the three major components of the President’s promise: cash rewards, housing benefits and national honours.

How Super Falcons Defeated Morocco to Win 10th WAFCON Title

The Super Falcons secured their historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title after producing a remarkable comeback against Morocco in the final played in Rabat on July 26, 2025.

Nigeria entered the final seeking to reclaim the continental crown against the host nation, which enjoyed strong home support.

Morocco initially took control of the match, scoring twice to establish a 2-0 advantage and put Nigeria under considerable pressure.

However, the Nigerian side staged an impressive second-half comeback.

Esther Okoronkwo reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 64th minute before Folashade Ijamilusi scored the equaliser seven minutes later.

Jennifer Echegini subsequently scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute, completing Nigeria’s comeback and securing a dramatic 3-2 victory.

The result extended Nigeria’s record as the most successful country in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The victory also reinforced the Super Falcons’ position as one of Africa’s strongest women’s national football teams.

Super Falcons’ Historic Achievement

Nigeria’s triumph in Morocco was particularly significant because it extended the country’s dominance in African women’s football.

The Super Falcons had previously won the competition nine times, making them the most successful national team in the tournament’s history.

Their 2025 victory further strengthened that record and demonstrated the team’s ability to compete under pressure, even when facing a hostile home crowd.

The comeback against Morocco attracted widespread praise from football supporters, sports administrators and Nigerians who followed the final.

The team’s performance also brought renewed attention to women’s football in Nigeria and the importance of investing in female athletes.

NSC Explains Significance of Reward Payment

The National Sports Commission said the fulfilment of the President’s promise was an important step towards improving confidence among Nigerian athletes.

Shehu Dikko noted that some Nigerian sporting heroes had previously waited for several years before receiving rewards promised by successive administrations.

He said the Tinubu administration’s decision to fulfil the commitment would encourage athletes to represent the country with greater confidence.

The commission also acknowledged the contributions of the Ministries of Finance, Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, and Housing and Urban Development towards completing the reward arrangements.

The development comes after the Federal Government fulfilled a similar financial reward commitment to Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their success at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket championship.

The D’Tigress players also received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each, while their coaches and officials received $50,000 each.

What the Payment Means for Nigerian Sports

The payment to the Super Falcons has renewed discussions about the importance of rewarding Nigerian athletes for international achievements.

For many years, Nigerian athletes have complained about unpaid allowances, delayed bonuses and unfulfilled financial promises after representing the country at major international competitions.

Such experiences have sometimes generated disputes between players, sports administrators and government officials.

The fulfilment of the Super Falcons’ reward package could therefore help strengthen confidence in government commitments to national teams.

However, sports stakeholders have continued to emphasise that rewarding athletes should go beyond one-time financial payments.

They have called for improved football infrastructure, better grassroots development, regular international competitions, improved welfare packages and sustainable investment in women’s football.

The Super Falcons’ achievement also presents an opportunity for football administrators to build on the team’s success by strengthening domestic women’s football competitions and creating better development opportunities for young female players.

With the cash component now fulfilled, the Federal Government has completed the major rewards promised to the team following its historic continental triumph.

The development marks another significant moment for the Super Falcons, whose victory in Morocco brought Nigeria its 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
