AFN Responds to Tobi Amusan’s Kit Complaint: “There’s Nothing Wrong with the Kits”

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has officially responded to recent criticisms from Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan regarding the state of the kits provided for athletes representing the country.

Amusan had earlier expressed dissatisfaction, sharing a photo of what appeared to be a single piece of kit, which sparked widespread backlash online and renewed criticism of Nigeria’s sports administration.

In a statement released by the federation, the AFN clarified that the Olympic kits were delivered in multiple batches and that Amusan’s viral post only showed a portion of the total gear allocated to athletes.

“There is nothing wrong with those kits. Tobi Amusan only brought out one pack out of the pack that she was given. The items came in batches, so they were told that the following day they would receive the rest of the kits. She just brought out only that one kit and displayed it to the world,” a federation spokesperson said.

The federation insists that all athletes were adequately informed about the delivery process and advised to wait for the complete set of apparel. The AFN emphasized that the situation was a misunderstanding and not a reflection of negligence or lack of preparation.

Tobi Amusan, the reigning World Champion and record holder in the 100m hurdles, is one of Nigeria’s top medal hopefuls at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Her public remarks stirred national debate over the treatment of athletes and the state of sports administration in Nigeria.

This latest response from the AFN may not put the controversy to rest, as many Nigerians continue to question the transparency and efficiency of the country’s sports leadership, particularly in the lead-up to major international competitions.

As the Olympic Games approach, all eyes remain on Nigeria’s preparations — both on and off the track.
