Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to collectively reject hunger, poverty and poor governance, urging citizens to demand a nation that works for everyone.
Obi made the remark on Friday in a message shared via his official social media platforms, where he expressed concern over the country’s worsening economic conditions and the hardship faced by millions of Nigerians.
According to him, the increasing levels of hunger, unemployment and poverty across the country require urgent action from both leaders and citizens.
“Nigerians must say enough to hunger, enough to poverty, enough to suffering,” Obi said, stressing that the country possesses the human and natural resources needed to improve the lives of its citizens if properly managed.
The former Anambra State governor argued that good governance, prudent management of public resources and investments in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing remain essential to lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty.
Obi maintained that leadership should prioritise improving the welfare of citizens rather than pursuing policies that fail to translate into better living conditions.
He also reiterated his longstanding position that governments at all levels should focus on productive investments capable of creating jobs, boosting economic growth and reducing dependence on imports.
The former presidential candidate urged Nigerians not to lose hope despite the country’s current economic challenges, encouraging citizens to remain actively engaged in the democratic process and continue demanding accountability from public office holders.
His comments come at a time when many Nigerians continue to grapple with rising food prices, inflation and increasing living costs following a series of economic reforms introduced by the Federal Government.
Government officials have maintained that the reforms are necessary to stabilise the economy and attract investment, arguing that the measures will deliver long-term economic benefits despite the immediate hardships experienced by citizens.
Obi, however, insisted that economic policies should be designed with the welfare of ordinary Nigerians at their core, warning that sustained poverty and hunger pose serious risks to national development and social stability.
The former governor concluded by urging Nigerians to remain united in their pursuit of a more prosperous, secure and equitable country, saying that meaningful change would require both responsible leadership and active citizen participation.
