Veteran Nollywood actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
In the family announcement, Olusoji described the late actor as the “Lion of Lufodo” and said the family was grateful for his life and legacy.
The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn the veteran actor.
Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most recognised actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film over several decades.
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before building a career in British theatre and television.
He later returned to Nigeria and became one of the prominent figures in the country’s emerging film industry.
Throughout his career, Jacobs appeared in numerous Nigerian and international productions and received several honours for his contribution to the performing arts.
Among his recognitions were the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and lifetime achievement honours from the Africa International Film Festival and the Africa Movie Academy Awards.
Jacobs also played an important role behind the scenes in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, were involved in the development of theatre and film through the Lufodo Group.
His death comes after years of recurring false reports about his passing. Previous death rumours had been repeatedly debunked, making the family’s announcement the confirmation of his death.
The veteran actor leaves behind his wife, Joke Silva, children and grandchildren, as well as a lasting body of work in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
His death has prompted reactions across Nigeria’s film and entertainment community as tributes continue to emerge for one of Nollywood’s most established figures.
