Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has signed the Senior Citizens Welfare Bill into law, marking a major social protection milestone in the state.
The new law provides comprehensive welfare benefits for indigenes of Abia State aged 60 years and above, guaranteeing them government-backed support for the rest of their lives.
Key Provisions of the Law
Under the Senior Citizens Law, eligible beneficiaries are entitled to:
- Free monthly stipend (salary) funded by the Abia State Government
- Free medical care, including treatment and essential drugs
- Priority access to healthcare services in public facilities
- Additional social welfare benefits aimed at improving quality of life until death
The law is designed to ensure dignity, financial security, and access to healthcare for elderly citizens who have contributed to the development of the state.
A Landmark Social Policy
Governor Otti’s approval of the bill positions Abia among a small number of Nigerian states with legislated, structured welfare systems for senior citizens. The policy aligns with the administration’s broader agenda of inclusive governance, social justice, and people-centered reforms.
Although implementation guidelines and funding mechanisms are expected to be unveiled in the coming days, government officials say the law will be executed through relevant ministries and agencies to ensure transparency and sustainability.
Public Reaction
The signing has been widely welcomed by residents, civil society groups, and elder advocacy organizations, who describe it as a historic intervention in a country where most senior citizens lack formal pensions or healthcare coverage.
Many see the law as a potential policy model for other states, especially amid rising living costs and healthcare challenges affecting the elderly.
More details on registration procedures, eligibility verification, and commencement date are expected from the Abia State Government soon.
