The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it is yet to receive budgetary allocations from the Federal Government for the conduct of the 2027 general elections, despite ongoing preparations for the nationwide polls.
The revelation was made by INEC’s National Commissioner in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, Mohammed Haruna, during a cross-sectoral interactive session held in Abuja and organised by the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) in collaboration with Legis360.
According to Haruna, although the commission has not yet received the required funding, it has continued preparations to ensure the successful conduct of the 2027 elections.
Earlier in February 2026, INEC submitted a proposed budget of ₦873.78 billion for the 2027 general elections to the National Assembly. The proposed expenditure covers election operations, technology, administrative costs, capital expenditure, and other miscellaneous expenses.
INEC officials have repeatedly stressed that early and adequate funding is crucial, as electoral laws require preparations and appropriations for general elections to commence well ahead of the polling dates.
The development is expected to raise concerns among political stakeholders and civil society groups regarding the timely release of funds needed to support voter registration activities, procurement of election materials and technology, personnel training, and other pre-election activities ahead of the 2027 polls.
