The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the deployment of tactical teams, alongside military personnel, in an operation to rescue more than 100 residents abducted by terrorists in Maburya community, Mariga Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were reportedly abducted on Saturday night when the terrorists invaded the community and whisked away more than 100 residents.
The incident has heightened concerns over the security situation in parts of Niger State, particularly communities located in areas vulnerable to attacks and abductions.
The Niger State Police Command said security forces have launched coordinated operations aimed at locating the abducted residents and bringing them back safely.
The command disclosed that tactical teams of the police and military had been deployed to the area as part of efforts to rescue the victims and track down the perpetrators.
Security personnel are reportedly combing surrounding areas and conducting operations based on available intelligence concerning the whereabouts of the abducted residents.
The police have also appealed to residents to provide useful information that could assist security agencies in locating the victims and apprehending those responsible for the attack.
The latest incident adds to the growing security challenges confronting communities in parts of Niger State, where armed groups have previously targeted rural settlements and carried out mass abductions.
Residents of affected communities have continued to call for stronger security measures to protect lives and property and prevent further attacks.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the abducted residents or confirmed whether the terrorists have established contact with their families.
The police also did not immediately provide details on whether any arrests had been made in connection with the incident.
Security agencies are expected to intensify the search operation as efforts continue to secure the safe release of the victims.
